CV format for Pakistan
Many CV formats still passed around in Pakistan date from a time when every application went on paper to a government office. They open with father's name, religion, CNIC number and date of birth, and bury the work experience on page two. Private companies, banks, software houses and multinationals now read CVs differently, and many of them screen applications through software before a person sees them.
This guide shows the format that works for private-sector jobs in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and other cities: what to keep, what to drop, how to show CGPA or division, and what changes when you plan to use the same CV abroad. Government jobs are different; they use their own forms, which we cover briefly below.

Pakistan CV format at a glance
| Usual length | 1 page for fresh graduates; 2 pages for experienced professionals |
|---|---|
| Photo | Common but optional. Many multinationals and software houses do not expect one |
| Page size | A4 |
| Personal details | Name, city, phone (+92 format), email and LinkedIn. That is enough for most private-sector jobs |
| CNIC number | Leave it out. Share it only when HR asks during formal onboarding |
| Education results | CGPA out of 4.0 for university degrees; division or percentage for Matric and Intermediate if you include them |
| Date format | Month and year (Jun 2023 – Present) is clearest |
| Language | English is the standard for CVs, even for Urdu-medium roles |
Include
- Professional summary. Two or three lines saying who you are and what you want. It replaces the old 'Objective' that only said you wanted 'a challenging position in a reputable organisation'.
- Phone number with country code. Write +92 3XX XXXXXXX. Recruiters, and anyone abroad, can dial it directly, and WhatsApp links work correctly.
- Degree, university and CGPA. Employers screen by degree and many set a CGPA cut-off, often for graduate programmes. If your CGPA is strong, show it. If it is weak and you have experience, you can leave it off.
- Internships and final-year project. For fresh graduates these are your work experience. Describe what you built or did, not just the company name.
- Skills that match the job advert. Applicant tracking systems on Rozee.pk, LinkedIn and company portals look for exact terms such as 'SAP', 'IFRS', 'React' or 'Google Ads'. Use the words in the advert where they are true for you.
- Certifications and short courses. ACCA papers, Google certificates, DigiSkills courses and similar show initiative, especially when your degree is not a perfect match for the role.
Leave out
- CNIC number. Your CNIC is linked to your bank accounts, SIM cards and NADRA records. A CV is uploaded to job sites and forwarded freely, so putting your CNIC on it exposes you to identity misuse. Employers collect it later through HR.
- Father's name. It is a tradition from government forms. Private employers do not use it to shortlist, and it takes space from your experience.
- Religion, sect and caste. None of these relate to the job. Leaving them out keeps the focus on your skills.
- Date of birth and marital status. Not needed at CV stage for private-sector jobs. Some employers ask later for records; that is the right time to share them.
- 'References available on request'. Employers assume this. Use the line for a skill or achievement instead.
The old Pakistani CV vs what recruiters read now
The traditional format starts with a large 'Personal Information' table: father's name, CNIC, domicile, religion, date of birth, marital status and postal address. It made sense for government departments that verify every applicant against official records. For a private company, it pushes your useful information down the page.
A modern CV starts with your name, a job title, city and contact details, then a short summary, then experience or education depending on which is stronger. HR teams at banks, telecoms, FMCG companies and software houses often shortlist from dozens or hundreds of CVs, and they decide in seconds whether to keep reading.
If you are a fresh graduate, put education first, followed by internships, projects and skills. Once you have a year or two of real experience, move experience above education.
Showing CGPA, division and grades
Universities in Pakistan mostly use CGPA on a 4.0 scale, so write it as '3.45/4.00' to remove doubt. If your university uses percentages, give the percentage instead. Avoid converting one system into another yourself.
For Matric and Intermediate (or O and A Levels), many candidates list the board, year and division or percentage, such as 'FSc Pre-Engineering, BISE Lahore, 2019, 82%'. Experienced professionals often drop school results entirely and keep only the degree.
If you have a strong professional qualification such as ACCA, CA or ICMA, list it above your degree for finance roles, with papers passed if you are still in progress.
Government jobs and private-sector CVs
Federal and provincial government jobs advertised through the FPSC, PPSC, SPSC, KPPSC and similar bodies, or tested through organisations such as NTS, use their own online forms and fixed formats. In those cases, you fill in the form exactly as instructed, including CNIC and domicile, and a CV is often not requested at all.
The CV format on this page is for private-sector employers, NGOs, multinationals and overseas applications. Keep the two separate in your mind: what a government form requires is not a guide to what your CV should contain.
Using your CV for jobs abroad
If you are applying to the Gulf, the UK or Canada, the same core CV can be adapted. Gulf employers expect nationality, visa status and notice period; the UK and Canada expect no photo and no date of birth. See the country guides for each.
Most foreign employers and immigration processes require your degree to be attested by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), and often by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after that. School certificates usually go through IBCC. Start this early, because it takes time and some employers ask for proof before issuing a visa.

Pakistan CV questions
Should I write my CNIC number on my CV?
No. Your CNIC is a sensitive identifier linked to your financial and telecom records, and a CV is shared widely. Private employers collect it during onboarding. Government job forms are the exception, because they require it in their own application system.
Is a photo necessary on a CV in Pakistan?
No. It is common, and some local employers like it, but many multinationals and tech companies prefer CVs without photos. If you add one, keep it formal and small, and never let it take space from your experience.
Which CV format is best for fresh graduates in Pakistan?
A one-page, single-column CV with education first, then internships, final-year project, skills and certifications. Include your CGPA if it is good. Skip father's name, CNIC and religion.
Do I need HEC attestation to apply for jobs abroad?
You usually do not need it to send a CV, but most overseas employers and visa processes require it before you start. Many also need Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation and attestation from the destination country's embassy. Check with the employer and start early.
