Accountant CV Example and Writing Guide
An accountant's CV is read by people who check figures for a living. They notice when dates don't line up, when a number looks inflated, or when you claim full ownership of work a junior usually supports. Accuracy and consistency count for more here than in most fields. A clean, conservative layout with matching date formats already says something about how you work.
Hiring managers want three things quickly: the qualification you hold or are studying for, the parts of the accounting cycle you've owned, and the systems you've used. Month-end close, reconciliations, VAT returns, audits, budgeting and ERP names are the terms that get matched. Back them up with the size of the business, the volume of transactions or the deadlines you met.
Below are keywords from real accounting job ads, bullet examples for financial and management accounting, and advice for applying in Pakistan, the Gulf and the UK. The sample CV also shows how to list a training contract and professional exams, which many candidates get wrong.

Accountant CV summary example
ACCA-qualified accountant with 7 years of experience in manufacturing and retail, covering month-end close, IFRS reporting and VAT compliance. Currently lead the general ledger team for a group of four companies, reporting to the finance director. Strong in SAP FICO and Excel modelling, with a record of shortening the close and passing external audits without significant findings. Seeking a senior accountant or finance manager role in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
Change the years, specialities and results to match your own record. A summary that could fit anyone helps no one.

Best section order
- Summary — Open with your qualification status (qualified, part-qualified or affiliate) and the sector you work in.
- Professional qualifications — ACCA, CA, CIMA or CPA status matters enough to sit near the top. Part-qualified candidates should list exams passed and remaining.
- Experience — Give the company type and size, the parts of the cycle you owned, and measurable results.
- Technical skills and systems — ERP and accounting software on one line, Excel skills on another. 'SAP FICO' beats a vague 'ERP systems'.

Common accountant CV mistakes
- Writing 'ACCA' when you've passed only some exams. Say 'ACCA part-qualified, 9 of 13 exams passed' or 'ACCA Affiliate'. Qualification status is easy to check, and overstating it can end an application.
- Copying duties from a textbook. 'Preparation of financial statements' doesn't show the size of the books, the deadlines or your role compared with your manager's.
- Mixing currencies without labels. Always put PKR, AED, SAR or GBP next to figures so a reader in another country understands the scale.
- Ignoring the system named in the ad. If the job asks for SAP and you've used it, put 'SAP' in your skills and in at least one bullet, because ATS software matches exact terms.
- Revealing confidential employer or client figures. Use ranges or percentages where turnover or profit isn't public.
Applying in the Gulf, Pakistan or the UK
Pakistan
Employers value articleship at a chartered accountancy firm, so list it as experience with the firm, the period and the kinds of clients you audited. Mention FBR work such as sales tax and withholding tax returns where it's relevant.
CV format guide →UAE and Saudi Arabia
UAE VAT has applied since 2018 and federal corporate tax since 2023, so hands-on FTA filing experience is worth stating plainly. For Saudi roles, experience with ZATCA VAT returns and e-invoicing (FATOORA) is a strong keyword. Gulf employers often ask for attested degrees, so start attestation early.
CV format guide →UK
Put your qualification status in your headline, for example 'Part-qualified ACCA' or 'AAT Level 4'. Leave out your photo and date of birth, and show figures in GBP or as percentages.

Accountant CV questions
How do I show ACCA part-qualified status on my CV?
Put it in your headline or summary, for example 'ACCA part-qualified (11 of 13 exams)'. In your qualifications section, list the levels you've completed and the exams you're sitting next, with the session. This shows progress honestly and helps employers who sponsor study.
Should I include my articleship on an accountant CV?
Yes. Articleship or a training contract is real experience, usually in audit and tax. List it like a job, with the firm, dates, and the industries and work you covered.
Which software should an accountant list on a CV?
List only what you've actually used: ERPs such as SAP, Oracle or Microsoft Dynamics, and smaller packages like QuickBooks, Xero or Tally. Describe your Excel level with examples such as pivot tables, XLOOKUP or Power Query, since 'MS Office' alone tells the reader very little.
Is CA or ACCA better for accounting jobs in the Gulf?
Gulf job ads commonly accept ACCA, CA, CPA or CMA, so either can get you shortlisted. Relevant experience, such as VAT, IFRS reporting or a specific ERP, usually decides more than which body you qualified with. Read the ads you're targeting and make your qualification easy to spot.
